Silent Hill 2 was ported to the PC in late 2002 (2003 in Europe as 'Director's Cut') by Creature Labs and getting the game to run on modern hardware can be a bit of a challenge. Here are some common issues and how to fix them.

Contents

1. System Requirements
2. Installing and running the game
3. Run the game with CPU Core Affinity set to 1!
4. Run as Administrator
5. Running the game without a disc drive
6. Playing in Full Screen or Windowed
7. Other Things to Remember

Installing and running the game

Install using the 3 CDs (there is no DVD version for PC), swapping the discs as the installer prompts. After installation, the game will ask if you want to install Direct X. Unless you're on Windows XP or older, click no, otherwise the install will crash, undo and you will have to start over.

Run the game with CPU Core Affinity set to 1!

Silent Hill 2 must be run on a single CPU core otherwise the games' audio loops/glitches and potentially crashes, modern CPUs will have multiple cores which of course did not at the time of release. To solve this, you must start the game, and while the game is booting through the Konami logo, alt tab out, open task manager, click on the 'Processes' tab, click 'Show processes from all users', find and right click 'sh2pc.exe', and set Affinity to 1 Core. This must be done every time you start the game.

If running the game fullscreen, you can have the game automatically start with single core affinity:

1. Copy 'C:WindowsSystem32cmd.exe' into the Silent Hill 2 install folder (example: 'C:Program Files (x86)KonamiSilent Hill 2cmd.exe').
2. Right click on your desktop and select 'New > Shortcut'.
3. Paste 'C:Program Files (x86)KonamiSilent Hill 2cmd.exe' /C start /affinity 1 sh2pc.exe' or wherever you installed the game to.
4. Call it Silent Hill 2 or whatever you wish, it doesn't matter.

Now it will always run with single core affinity without having to alt-tab to Task Manager.

Run as Administrator

Silent Hill 2 must be run as Administrator on newer Windows operating systems because save files are written to the Program Files directory otherwise you will be unable to save the game. Alternatively, you can install to a directory outside of Program Files where write actions do not need permission.

Running the game without a disc drive

Mounting your discs as ISOs will allow you to install the game, but starting the game once installed will give a prompt that there is no CD inserted. There are two solutions:

1. Use later versions of Alcohol 120%, this software is able hide emulated drives from SecuROM 7 and SafeDisc 4.
2. If running the NTSC Silent Hill 2, the official Konami Patch from Resources (left sidebar) will allow you to mount your Disc 1 ISO with any software and run the game. Will NOT work with European Director's Cut version.

Playing in Full Screen or Windowed

By default the game runs in Fullscreen mode with no ingame options to allow it windowed, therefor either D3DWindower or DXWND is recommended.
Playing the game Fullscreen is fine of course, but if you have multiple monitors and want to play Fullscreen:

(Windows 7 and above) go to Control Panel > Display (view by large/small icons) > Change Display Settings and make the Monitor you want the game to run fullscreen on as 'Display 1'. Note that you wont be able to directly interact with what is on Display 2 outside of global hotkeys (you'll be able to see/use LiveSplit with global hotkeys for example).

Other Things to Remember

• Certain audio segments cannot have their volume adjusted in the settings (most notably the Trick or Treat elevator scene and the final hallway before the final boss will always play at a high volume with no ingame way to turn them down), the best way to balance the games' audio is to adjust the 'BGM Volume' and 'SE Volume' in the Options menu to their maximum levels and then adjust Silent Hill 2's overall audio level in the Windows 'Volume Mixer'.

• Saving while entering a door can cause a glitch where random text will appear (for example the passenger door says 'Motorhome' at the beginning of the game), therefor try not to mash the quicksave button while entering different rooms/areas.

Hill

• In addition to the above, quicksaving while picking up items or while Yes/No prompts are on the screen can softlock the game which requires you to load a save or quit.

• Freezing may occasionally occur (I've personally had this happen once or twice while quickloading in the Bug Room), unless its doing it frequently, this is simply the game being a so-so port to the PC than a specific issue.

• Using 'No CD' cracks are not recommended incase of other side effects, see above for running the game without the need of using your discs.

Finally, from the rules set for this games' speedrun:

'Third party modifications are not allowed (Widescreen Fix, sh2_proxy etc.)'

Using any of these mods/tools will result in your run being rejected, if you have played Silent Hill 2 using any of these previously, please remove them from your install folder. If you're having problems after having done this, a clean install of the game and deleting the previous 'konamiSilent Hill 2' folder should solve the problem.

If you're still having problems, feel free to make a post in the Silent Hill 2 forum or join the SH discord (link in the left sidebar).
